The year 2023 marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Viet Nam, with a strategic partnership between the two countries having tightened over the years.
In 2020, the stock of foreign direct investment (FDI) from the UK in Viet Nam was £932 million ($1,242 million) and bilateral trade increased 11% since the signing of the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement in 2020.
Viet Nam is set to add 36 million people to its middle class by 2030, positioning itself as one of the world’s fastest growing middle-class population. This will drive greater demand for services in healthcare, education, finance, and insurance, with the main opportunities for UK investment in Viet Nam including: green and renewable energy, education and education technology, healthcare, finance, and innovation and ICT.
In 1982 he began a 17 year career in the City of London, initially working on the floor of the London Stock Exchange before specialising in Far Eastern and other global emerging market investment banking. In 1999, Mark switched to boutique investment fund management, running small specialist funds, until he was elected in 2010. He also spent a spell as a small business advisor. He has served on the Court of the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness makers of London for a number of years.
Mark was a district councillor of the Forest of Dean District Council from 2003 to 2007 and was elected as the Conservative MP for Wyre Forest in May 2010. He served on the Treasury Select Committee (2010 – 2016) and the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards (2012 – 2014). Mark also served as chairman on a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups and was previously the Prime Minister’s trade envoy to Burma, Brunei and Thailand before he became Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for International Trade from 17 July 2016 to 9 January 2018.
Attend this closed roundtable to gain valuable insights from Mark on his vision for the country as the UK’s new Trade Envoy to Viet Nam. Mark will also provide an update from his recent visit to Viet Nam in early March. This will also offer members an excellent opportunity to discuss their organisations’ business perspectives, including current priorities, challenges and market access barriers they have encountered in the market. The session will end with a Q&A between members and the Trade Envoy.
