Nick Forbes has joined the British Expertise International as a senior adviser, having led the Labour held Newcastle City Council for 11 years, until 2022. As a Senior Adviser he is helping members involved across the infrastructure value-chain to both maximise their current engagement with Labour mayors and local government and how to best prepare for a possible change of government in the 2024 election.
Nick Forbes CBE is a Labour politician and formerly the Leader of Newcastle City Council. Nick made economic growth a key feature of his time as leader, securing new financial powers by negotiating one of the first round of City Deals with government and was been instrumental in securing a devolution deal for the North of Tyne. He played a leading role in raising the profile of local government in a time of austerity and has been involved in national lobbying efforts for successive local government finance settlements.
Nick has been Chair of Core Cities UK and Leader of the Local Government Association Labour Group. In this role he was invited by Sir Keir Starmer to attend Shadow Cabinet meetings, representing the increasingly powerful voice of local government within the Labour Party.
