Context
Indonesia is one of East Asia’s most vibrant democracies, and is on track to becoming a middle-income country. Whilst Indonesia’s poverty rate was cut by more than half since 1999 to under 10% in 2019, the pandemic partially off-set the progress in poverty reduction for the country.
Indonesia is home to 275 million people; 40% of Indonesia’s population is younger than 30 years old, and the middle class is not only growing but is the biggest in Southeast Asia.
Education context + opportunities
Indonesia has compulsory education for a minimum of 12 years and schools are either public or private. The country represents a huge potential market for secondary, higher, and vocational education providers as the Indonesian government has made a dedicated commitment to education reform and investment into the sector.
According to the International Trade Administration, there were 5.4 million students enrolled in vocational schools between 2021-22. Vocational schools are of increasing interest to the government, with plans underway to improve the vocational education system.
The DIT and FCDO teams based in Indonesia will cover current opportunities for UK-based education providers, ranging from Higher Education and skills development to prepare Indonesia’s youth for the job market; teacher training, online-teaching and learning (edtech), and in disaster-resilient infrastructure.
