The recent ICAI report finding published on 14 October 2021 suggested that a “more ambitious approach is required for the alignment of UK aid with the Paris Agreement”. Following the UK hosting of COP26 and the urgency of the climate crisis this event will look at how the UK can deliver the transformative impact necessary for pursuing low-emission, climate-resilient development.
Join us for what will be an interesting discussion with a panel of speakers spanning government, academia and Think-Tanks. Leading the event is the ICAI Chief Commissioner Tamsyn Barton, who will present the findings followed by a variety of perspectives on the report.
The FCDO developed four tools to support the Paris alignment process: a climate risk assessment; shadow carbon pricing; a fossil fuel policy; and alignment with country partners’ own climate mitigation and adaptation plans. In April 2021, the application of the four tools became a mandatory requirement for all new FCDO programmes – but how effective has it been and how can the tools be improved.
In their report, the ICAI recommended that Paris alignment is “embedded at the heart of the forthcoming International Development Strategy with timebound milestones and a cross-government reporting and accountability process”. In addition further recommendations suggested that “the UK should urgently build capacity and capabilities across its ODA spending teams to deliver Paris alignment and should work with other countries to establish and promote international best practice.”
For BEI’s Climate Change working group, and our members in general, the report provides some insightful perspectives based on their experiences delivering ODA funded programmes.
Join the discussion and hear from the panelists and also have your say.
This event will be hosted as a webinar for BEI members.
