Join us for an insightful Market Opportunity Overview webinar, featuring colleagues from the Department for Business and Trade at the British Embassy in Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s economic landscape is complex, yet promising. In 2023, the country’s economy grew by 7.2%, according to government figures, while the IMF estimated a slightly lower growth rate of 6.1%.
The services sector has become the largest contributor to Ethiopia’s GDP, accounting for around 41% of the total. This includes trade, transport, tourism, and financial services. Agriculture, while still vital and employing a significant portion of the population, now contributes approximately 38% to GDP. Key agricultural products include coffee and teff, essential for the traditional flatbread injera. The industrial sector contributes 23% to GDP, and although it faces challenges, efforts are underway to bolster manufacturing and promote industrialization.
Ethiopia has recently undertaken significant economic reforms aimed at supporting private sector-led growth. Key reforms include improvements in the business environment through regulatory changes, tax incentives, and substantial investments in infrastructure, such as transportation networks, energy projects, and digital infrastructure.
UK companies have substantial potential to support Ethiopia’s growth in sectors such as Infrastructure and Energy, Education and Skills, and Manufacturing. Opportunities also exist in the Climate Adaptation and Mitigation. The UK’s development efforts have cultivated a strong bilateral relationship with Ethiopia, creating a fertile ground for British business engagement.
