We are delighted to announce that our key note speaker will be none other than John Carstensen, Climate Change Lead for Mott MacDonald in ISMA (International Development, South Asia, Middle East and Africa). John has over 35 years of experience in the field of sustainable development, environment and climate change from private sector, governments, United Nations and NGO perspectives, alongside an extensive history of living and working in several countries in Asia.
John led international negotiations to protect the Ozone Layer as Chair of the Montreal Protocol working group from 1992 to 1995, then went on to deliver poverty-orientated programmes in Thailand, Egypt and Vietnam on behalf of the Danish government, focusing on managing nature resources, water resources, coastal zones, cities, industrial pollution, protected areas, and also working across education and awareness. John also worked for UNEP both in Nairobi and in Geneva.
From here, John became CEO of Society for the Environment in the UK, an umbrella body for UK’s professional bodies for environmental professionals that operates Chartered Environmentalists and Chief Operating Officer for INTRAC, a UK based civil society capacity development organisation. Other positions include Chairman of the OECD/DAC Environet and Head of Profession for Climate and Environment in DFID, prior to his current position.
John will be speaking to us about his experiences working in the sector over the years, his thoughts on the future of the sector and the realities we are facing in light of an exacerbating climate crisis. Echoed by sentiments posed by COP27, asking “Is 1.5 still alive?”, we will hear from John about his hopes for the coming year for COP28 and the steps the international community need to take together to ensure an sustainable, equitable and stable future for our earth.
