Our keynote speaker for this session, which is kindly being sponsored by Ricardo, will be Dr Mark Broomfield, Technical Director at Ricardo Energy and Environment, who brings over 30 years’ experience as an air quality assessment and management specialist. Mark is the author of popular science book “Every breath you take: a user’s guide to the atmosphere,” published in 2019.
Mark has provided support to the UK Government and regulators, the European Commission, local authorities, industrial and commercial clients since 1992. More recently, he has been working to improve air quality in cities throughout Asia and worldwide, most recently travelling to Vietnam and Mongolia. In the UK, he leads the delivery of regional air quality modelling studies in support of strategic development planning. He is responsible for complex and challenging aspects of the UK's National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) and Greenhouse gas inventory which supports national policy and progress towards meeting international commitments.
He is a member of the UK Natural Environment Research Council Peer Review College and the UK Institute of Air Quality Management. Mark will talk about his commitment to improving air quality worldwide, how this has changed over the past 30 years and his vision for the future.
Air quality is of huge importance globally. More than 99% of the world’s population breathe unhealthy air, and as a result, 7 million people suffer an early death as a result of air pollution each year. This translates to an estimated 2.2 years off global average life expectancy. Air pollutants are responsible for up to 45% of global warming, and on top of that, air pollutants and greenhouse gases are often emitted from the same sources. This is both a huge challenge, and a great opportunity to take effective steps to deal with the related problems of a changing climate and a polluted atmosphere at the same time.
Join us for an evening of though-provoking conversations with leaders across UK industry in the climate space!
